What if we weren't the greatest nation in the world according to an economic-military value set? What if we realized we can't be the best at everything? What if we measured our greatness in different terms? The kindest nation on earth or the most pluralistic, or most faithful? Aren't these real strengths? Greater strengths than the other criteria that we talk about or that other nations use? You want to go back to what the founding fathers planned? Okay well, it's likely they agreed with me and it's also likely that in two hundred years we should have learned something from our experiences. So we don't repeat history.

Let someone else have the highest standard of living: luxury makes you weak.

Let another nation have the best test scores: standardization breeds complacency.

Let another people have the most on time trains: expectations promote a sense of entitlement.

If we have one defining trait as a people--and we can only have one--let us be a nation of creative caring individuals who work together while retaining vastly different personal and cultural identities. Because the greatest works of humanity only come about in this kind of environment.
