In this edition of Springs Things, we look at some suggestions on where to go and what to do to help build up your community and expand your own cultural experiences.

For tunes...

Monday I suggest you go to your local Carl's Jr. and check out a second-hand saxophone. That's where I'll be, to see if it's time I add a new instrument to my amateur repertoire. If everything goes off without a hitch, join me as I try to blurt out tones when my neighbors aren't around.

For intellectual stimulation...

Also on Monday, stop by Colorado College for a discussion with Senior Editor of the New Republic Julia Ioffe, where she shares her insight into Russia's contemporary political and social climate.

For community support...

All this week, the 2014 Warrior Games will be taking place at the Air Force Academy and U.S. Olympic Training Center, where wounded, ill, and injured members of the armed forces will be competing in a variety of sport, including volleyball, track and field, swimming, archery and more. Come out to support soldiers from around the country as they showcase their excellence and spirit. All events are free and open to the public.

For taste...

This weekend, we'll be headed to Adam's Mountain Café to see what all the buzz is about. Nestled in the quaint streets of Manitou Springs, Adam's Mountain Café serves "Global Cuisine, including Vegetarian and Vegan,  based on Slow Food principles emphasizing organic, local food and sustainable practices." Now if you're not familiar with slow food principles, it's primarily the idea that eating should be a positive, uplifting part of life, both in the preparation and in the consumption of the food. After we sample the venues delights, we'll take a moment to enjoy water from the town's numerous natural mineral springs (I especially like the fizzy ones).

For style...

On Tuesday, we'll head to some thrift stores to start gathering materials for some home furnishing projects I have: a braided rug and curtains. For the braided rug, I need anything made of wool, and for the curtains, well, we'll just see what they have. Also, I'd like a suit. So maybe I'll find something if I scour a few different thrift stores. Suggestions are welcome.

For reflection...

Next Sunday, Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church presents the Organ Recital and Choral Evensong as part of Taylor Memorial Concerts series. The evening will include a 30 minute recital and a service where the choir sings the better part of the liturgy. Reception to follow.
