Another word on blogging

Blogging can be used for many purposes. Many, many bloggers (most of my friends who blog) use the web log as a medium to share what is going on in their lives. They write about what they've done or where they've been. They post pictures of themselves, sights, and friends. It can be a great way for friends to keep up with each other without ever talking: "I know everything about your life." It can also be great for stalkers and other potentially unwelcome folks to find out way too much about an individual's life. Anywho...

I like sharing those kinds of things, yes, but it's much more fun to share in person. Maybe one day I will start one of those blogs. For now, I see blogging as an opportunity to practice writing and practice the verbal construction of my ideas. For this blog and the blogs I have links to in the right-hand column, I see the modus operandi not so much a sharing of what's going on in one's life but more as a sharing of a unique critical perspective. Those are the kinds of blogs that will end up in the column. That is, they'll stay there until I realize that they don't create a dialog about ideas, only about their life. Then, these condemned blogs will be cast out into my Google Reader, where only I and those who follow me there will be privy to the tellings of the lives of others.
