A short history of auto-tuning

The story of auto-tunes rise is tightly tied to the rise of T-Pain. So, we're going to begin with this artists first popular sallies onto the scene. T-Pain was really exposed when he bounced with FLO Rida in "Apple-bottom Jeans". Obviously, his performance was much more powerful in Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss", yeah, it moves you. What's interesting in this video is that it's Chris who auto-tunes in this one.

Here's T-Pain pre-auto-tune with "Church". Pretty sweet, right? Then, he throws the auto-tune into his work and you have "Freeze". You can hear the difference, right? I think the auto-tuning takes center stage as a musical element in his " Buy u a drank".

Jamie Foxx liked auto-tuning enough to make it the principle musical element of his new single "Blame It". Yeah, no, that's not his voice. Thanks Jake and Sammy!

But, let's be honest no one auto-tunes like T-Pain. So when Lonely Island, the video shorts masters of SNL were looking to parody Akon's "I'm so paid", there was just one call to be make. Here is edited version of the phenomenon making video: "I'm on a boat".

Who didn't love this one? Even Taylor Swift caught this wave: her opening for the CMT Music Awards took several pages straight out of Lonely Island's book.
Check it "Thug Story". (Unfortunately, CMT has the monopoly on a good version of this.)

You know the auto-tune sensation has reached an all new high (?) when Ellen Degeneres has a segment all about it. The phenomenon has permeated the comfy couch sphere of society. What's all this for? Well, the point of T-Pain visiting the show is to push his new iphone application, which carries his own name. Oh, consumerism, thou shalt carry the great ones to the farthest corners of the earth. But let's be honest, his appearance on the Ellen Show gives a lovable face.

Well, having understood all this, now you can check out all of the Gregory Brothers' videos. Sit back and enjoy. Let the Reverend sing it!

Post Note:
I think we need to make an honorable mention of Lil Wayne and his use of electronically modulated voices.

This one isn't really necessary, but it rocks the bass.
