Home Decor, Paintings Edition

In May, once school let out, I had time to rearrange the furniture and add another aesthetic element to my room: in this case, abstract paintings. I purchased two paintings from my friend, Jessica. I'm not a fan of industrially produced objects. I feel much more grounded when I am around objects that reflect a maker. That's one reason why I build my own furniture. However, making all of your own stuff gets you stuck in a self-centric world. That's one reason why I was glad to acquire something that was created by an individual, a unique work. (I guess this is what Benjamin was talking about with his concept of the aura or a work of art.)

Obviously, her art is very different from my DIY projects, but both carry an energy with them that is personal. I can look at the paintings again and again, and still they radiate an energy that is outside of me, but still personal. It is like having another presence in the room all the time, but something much more constant and deep than the radio or television.
