“Berman, Sabina (1953– ). Mexican playwright, director, poet, novelist, and screenwriter. Berman belongs to a generation of writers who grew up during ‘the crisis’, a protracted period of political and economic instability and corruption which bred a deeply cynical view of the country's leadership and moral values. Its imprint is everywhere evident in Berman's work: in the trio of estranged youths who inhabit an abandoned apartment building in Sudden Death (1989); in Krisis (1996), a dark, twisted satire of Mexican politics in the 1990s; and in the Kafkaesque world of The Crack (1997). Berman stands out for her continuous record of successes, including Between Pancho Villa and a Naked Woman (1993), a comedy about machismo; Molière (1998); and Happy New Century, Doktor Freud (2000), a tragicomedy about the repercussions of psychotherapy on its originator and his patients.”
